BJP Dismisses Amartya Sen's 'Hindu Rashtra' Remarks as Unfounded
The BJP on Thursday dismissed Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's assertion that the Lok Sabha election results indicated India is not a 'Hindu Rashtra'. The party stated that his comments did not reflect the actual situation in the country. According to senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha, Sen should adopt a neutral perspective.

Sen's Remarks and BJP's Response
Rahul Sinha, a former West Bengal BJP president, criticised Sen for not appreciating the government's efforts. "Even if the NDA government does the best work in the world, Mr Amartya Sen will not appreciate that. He should have judged the situation in the country before the party came to power, and the current situation after all these years," Sinha said.
Sinha also accused Sen of favouring the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. He suggested that Sen's remarks were intended to please Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "I wish he could see things from a neutral point of view... People of India have voted for the BJP for their efforts to cleanse the system, making it corruption-free and taking the economy to greater heights," Sinha added.
Additional BJP Perspectives
Echoing Sinha's sentiments, former Union minister Debasree Chaudhuri dismissed Sen's comments as disconnected from reality. She remarked, "These are his personal views. He stays in the US and sometimes comes to India for personal reasons. I do not think we should give much importance to whatever he said to seek attention." Chaudhuri emphasised that being re-elected for three consecutive terms is significant, indicating public support for BJP's governance.
Sen's Analysis and TMC's Support
Upon returning from the US, Sen had stated on Wednesday evening that "India is not a Hindu Rashtra only has been reflected in the election results". He also criticised the practice of detaining people without trial, claiming it has increased under BJP compared to Congress rule.
TMC MP Dola Sen supported Amartya Sen’s analysis, describing it as an accurate reflection of India's current situation. She said, "These are very significant views. Prof Sen is a world-renowned economist who has perfectly analysed the situation. His take is objective and real."
The differing perspectives highlight ongoing political tensions and varying interpretations of India's socio-political landscape. While BJP leaders dismiss Sen’s views as biased or irrelevant, TMC representatives consider them insightful and accurate.
The debate underscores broader discussions about governance, democracy, and national identity in contemporary India.
