BJP MLAs Face Charges for Assaulting Police Officers During Kolkata Protest March

Kolkata Police have filed seven cases against BJP MLAs for allegedly assaulting officers and obstructing their duties during a protest march. The incident coincided with the anniversary of a tragic crime at RG Kar hospital.

The Kolkata Police have filed seven cases against two BJP MLAs, a party leader, and others. They are accused of obstructing police duties, assaulting officers, and damaging public property during a march to the West Bengal secretariat Nabanna. This incident occurred on Saturday, coinciding with the anniversary of a tragic event at RG Kar hospital.

Chaos erupted in Kolkata and Howrah as protesters clashed with police. The protest marked one year since the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital. The victim's mother was hospitalised with a head injury during the unrest. Allegations arose that she was beaten by police during the protest.

Police Investigation and Allegations

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma stated, "It is part of the investigation, and we will probe into the matter. We will take action as required." The injury to the victim's mother is regrettable, and the allegations are being investigated thoroughly.

Video footage from CCTV, drones, and other sources is being reviewed to identify those who violated directives and caused disruptions. Verma mentioned that any complaints received would be investigated, even if no formal complaint is lodged.

Protesters' Actions and Police Response

The protest saw multiple confrontations between police and demonstrators. BJP MLA Ashok Dinda was recorded threatening police officers. He claimed that their peaceful rally was disrupted by an unprovoked police lathi-charge. Dinda stated, "We were rallying peacefully when the police lathi-charged us without any reason."

During the Nabanna Abhiyan, protesters faced off with police at various points in Kolkata and Howrah. The police had set up 10-foot-high iron barricades to control the crowd's movement towards the state secretariat.

Legal Proceedings and Arrests

The cases against BJP legislators Ashok Dinda, Agnimtra Paul, party leader Kaustav Bagchi, and others include non-bailable sections. These cases were registered at Park Street Police Station and Hare Street Police Station. However, the number of arrests made during the rally remains unconfirmed.

Five policemen injured during clashes are receiving treatment at SSKM Hospital. Commissioner Verma visited them to assess their condition. The investigation continues as authorities scrutinise video evidence to determine further actions.

Allegations also surfaced regarding police personnel trampling the national flag during the march. Commissioner Verma confirmed that these claims are under investigation as well.

The situation remains tense as both sides await further developments in this ongoing investigation. The authorities are committed to ensuring justice for all parties involved while maintaining law and order in the region.
