BJP holds strategy meet ahead of Triple Talaq Bill's Rajya Sabha test

New Delhi, Aug 10: With the Union Government set to table the Triple Talaq Bill in the Rajya Sabha today, a BJP strategy meeting is currently underway in the Parliament.

The BJP-led government would hope that the tweaks in the bill cleared by the cabinet on Thursday would persuade some non-NDA parties, who had concerns about the misuse of the law, to support the bill in its new form.

BJP President Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and other senior leaders are present at the meeting, reported ANI.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved amendments in the Triple Talaq Bill. Under the amendments cleared, a magistrate will have powers to grant bail. The woman can approach the magistrate to seek subsistence allowance for herself and her minor children, and can also seek custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take a final call on the matter.

Union Cabinet yesterday also approved inclusion of provisions that the complaint in such a case can only be filed by the victim (wife) or blood relations

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today urged Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to support the bill. He said if Congress does not support the 'Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill,' then Rahul Gandhi should not talk of gender justice, dignity and equality.

The original bill was cleared by the Lok Sabha last year but has been stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the BJP-led NDA lacks numbers.

If the bill is cleared by the Upper House, it will have to go to the Lok Sabha for approval of amendments.
