BJP Leader Vinod Tawde Responds to Sharad Pawar's Criticism of Amit Shah's Political Actions

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Vinod Tawde criticised Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar for his remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Tawde accused Pawar of forgetting the principles of Maharashtra's social reformers. This exchange followed Shah's accusation that Pawar has engaged in "politics of betrayal and treachery" in Maharashtra since 1978.

Tawde Defends Amit Shah Against Pawars Criticism

Sharad Pawar, responding to Shah's comments, noted that none of Shah’s predecessors as Union Home Ministers faced externment. Tawde defended Shah, stating that the externment order against him was related to an act of patriotism concerning the encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, a terrorist. Tawde argued that protecting criminal elements does not align with the values established by figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and social reformers Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar.

Political Legacy and Criticism

Tawde questioned whether Pawar would have made similar remarks about freedom fighter V D Savarkar or BJP leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani, who faced imprisonment during the Emergency before assuming leadership roles. He suggested that Pawar's comments lacked respect for those who have served the nation under challenging circumstances.

The verbal exchanges between Shah and Pawar began after Shah criticised Pawar at a BJP convention in Shirdi on January 12. Shah claimed that the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance had ended Pawar's style of politics after their victory in the previous assembly elections. In response, Pawar highlighted his long political career since 1958 and his tenure as Maharashtra's Chief Minister in 1978.

Historical Context and Political Contributions

Pawar emphasised his extensive experience in politics, noting that he was already a prominent figure when many current leaders were not yet involved in politics. He urged Amit Shah to be better informed before making such statements. The Rajya Sabha MP also highlighted the contributions of political stalwarts like Yashwantrao Chavan, who were known for their inclusive approach rather than divisive politics.

Tawde's remarks aimed to remind Pawar of Maharashtra's rich history of social reformers and their values. He suggested that some leaders' actions, such as protecting criminal associates, do not reflect these values. Tawde's comments were part of a broader political discourse surrounding the legacy and conduct of current and past political figures in Maharashtra.

The ongoing exchange between BJP and NCP leaders highlights the deep-seated political rivalries in Maharashtra. As both parties continue to engage in verbal battles, they draw on historical figures and events to bolster their positions. This reflects the complex interplay of past legacies and present-day politics in shaping Maharashtra's political landscape.
