BJP Launches Inquiry into Absence of MPs During Lok Sabha Voting on Simultaneous Elections Bill
The BJP is investigating why nearly 20 of its MPs were absent from the Lok Sabha during Tuesday's vote on the simultaneous elections bill. The party had issued a whip mandating attendance, and the absence of so many members has caused concern among its leaders, according to sources. However, some MPs had notified their absence in advance due to personal or work commitments.

Two bills proposing mechanisms for simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha following a heated 90-minute debate on Tuesday. Opposition parties criticised the move as dictatorial and infringing on state powers, but Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal dismissed these concerns. The Constitution 129th Amendment Bill was presented by Meghwal after a vote division.
MPs' Absence Raises Concerns
A senior leader stated, "We are definitely looking into the reasons behind their absence. Quite a few had genuine reasons." Some MPs, including Union Minister C R Patil, were involved in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public event in Rajasthan, sources revealed. Additionally, four to five MPs from BJP allies were also missing during the vote, which is under scrutiny.
The bill received support from 269 members, while 198 opposed it. The absence of several BJP MPs during such a crucial vote has prompted the party to seek explanations. Despite some MPs providing valid reasons for their absence, the leadership remains concerned about the overall turnout.
The introduction of these bills has sparked significant debate within the Lok Sabha. While the government argues that simultaneous elections will streamline processes, opposition parties fear it could undermine state autonomy. The ongoing investigation into MPs' absences highlights the importance of party unity during critical legislative sessions.
As the BJP continues to probe this issue, it underscores the need for clear communication and coordination among party members. Ensuring full attendance during key votes is crucial for maintaining party discipline and achieving legislative goals.
