BJP Heavyweights Who Lost In 2024 Lok Sabha Elections In 2024

The results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 have not gone as expected for the ruling BJP, which had set a mammoth target of 400 seats. Despite high ambitions, the BJP has fallen 32 seats short of a majority.

From 303 in 2019, the BJP has been reduced to 240 in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The ruling party suffered major blows in key states - Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

High-Profile Defeats

Smriti Irani, a prominent BJP figure and Minister of Women and Child Development since 2019, lost in Amethi to Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma by 1,67,196 votes.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra Teni, lost to Samajwadi Party's Utkarsh Verma by over 34,329 votes. He had hit headlines earlier after the controversial Lakhimpur Kheri incident which erupted after a car belonging to Ashish Mishra, son of Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Mishra, allegedly ran over the farmers who were protesting against the Centre's three farm laws.

Arjun Munda, Union Tribal Affairs Minister, lost in Khunti, Jharkhand. Congress candidate Kalicharan Munda won by 1,49,675 votes.

Kailash Choudhary, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, finished third in Barmer, Rajasthan. He trailed by 4.48 lakh votes to Congress' Ummeda Ram Beniwal.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar was defeated in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala by Congress' Shashi Tharoor who won by over 16,077 votes.

Other Notable Losses

Mahendra Nath Pandey, Union Minister of Heavy Industries, lost his Chandauli seat in Uttar Pradesh. Kaushal Kishore, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, lost against RK Chaudhary of Samajwadi Party by 70,292 votes in Mohanlalganj.

Nishith Pramanik, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, lost the Cooch Behar seat in West Bengal to TMC's Jagadish Chandra Basunia by over 39,000 votes. Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar lost to Trinamool Congress' Arup Chakraborty in Bankura, West Bengal by 32,778 votes.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, lost in Fatehpur, UP. Rao Saheb Danve, Minister of State for Railways, was defeated in Jalna, Maharashtra by Congress' Kalyan Vaijnath Rao Kale.

V Muraleedharan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, lost in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. L Murugan, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, was defeated by DMK's A Raja in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu by 2,40,585 votes.Cabinet Minister Rk Singh lost to CPI(ML)'s Sudama Prasad in Arrah, Bihar. Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan was defeated in Muzaffarnagar by Samajwadi Party's Harendra Singh Malik by over 24,000 votes.
