BJP's Kailash Vijayvargiya Bats for Simultaneous Elections Across India

In support of the 'one nation, one election' proposal, BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya questions why elections cannot be held simultaneously when festivals are celebrated at the same time across India.

At a recent event in Indore, Kailash Vijayvargiya, the general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), voiced his support for the 'one nation, one election' proposal. The veteran politician argued that if festivals like Diwali, Christmas and Eid can be celebrated simultaneously across India despite diverse weather conditions, then why not elections? His remarks came in response to skepticism about the feasibility of holding simultaneous polls given the vast geographical expanse of the country and its varied climatic patterns.

Vijayvargiya's Argument

One Nation One Election

The BJP leader highlighted how major religious festivals are observed at the same time all over India. "We celebrate Diwali together across the country. The festivals of Christmas and Eid are also celebrated together all over the country....so why can not we celebrate the election-day together," he asserted. This analogy was meant to challenge doubts regarding whether it would be practically possible to conduct nationwide elections in a single phase.

Criticisms towards Congress

In addition to advocating for simultaneous polls, Vijayvargiya took this opportunity to criticize Congress's outreach campaign 'Jan Akrosh Yatra'. He termed it an 'apology yatra', implying that it was an attempt by Congress to apologize for their alleged failures ahead of upcoming assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh scheduled for November.

He further accused previous Congress government led by Kamal Nath of failing to fulfil promises made to farmers, milk producers, unemployed youth and teachers. These criticisms serve as part of BJP’s strategy against Congress as both parties gear up for impending assembly elections.

Women Reservation Bill

Vijayvargiya also made mention of a bill introduced by Narendra Modi government reserving a quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, the details of his statement or stance on this particular issue were not provided.

In conclusion, Vijayvargiya's remarks have brought 'one nation, one election' proposal back into the spotlight. His comparison of nationwide polls to simultaneous celebration of festivals is an interesting perspective that aims at simplifying a complex and contentious issue. While it remains to be seen how this idea will be received by other political parties and the public at large, it certainly adds another dimension to ongoing discussions about electoral reforms in India.
