Lucknow, Sep 8: The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday flayed the Akhilesh Yadav government in the state for the "spurt" in crimes against women and said the lives of women had become miserable under the Samajwadi Party rule.

The opposition party said launching of apps and services like 1090 were in fact "mere eyewash" and were of no help to women in Uttar Pradesh.

Citing recent cases of eve-teasing and gangrapes in many parts of the state, state party spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that in most cases the police did not even act for fear of reprimand from senior officers as the accused were from a specific caste or community.

In two such cases, the victim girls chose to commit suicide as their pleas of action against the accused fell on deaf ears, he added.

Pathak cited the case of Charthawal in Muzaffarnagar where girls were dragged out from a bus in broad daylight, leading to tension between two communities. "This area became a communal flashpoint only two years ago under similar conditions but the police failed to rise to the occasion," the BJP leader told IANS.

Pathak also referred to the case of a girl in Belipar in Gorakhpur who was teased while on way to college and hanged herself after police failed to act on her complaint. Police later forced her family to compromise with the accused, he said.

In Unnao, two girls were raped and their families contacted police after they went missing but to no avail. Their bodies - one burnt by acid and the other hanging from a tree - were found the next day.

"Somebody will have to give answers for these bone-chilling incidents," he added.
