West Bengal: BJP Trying To Overcome Electoral Setbacks With RSS Insights
The BJP's electoral strategies have faced significant setbacks in West Bengal, as evidenced by the recent Lok Sabha elections. Despite a strong showing in 2019, the party has now suffered its second consecutive defeat. However, the saffron party is trying to learn from the defeats and eyeing a better result in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections in 2026.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP's ideological mentor, has conducted a detailed analysis of this defeat. According to an article in their magazine 'Swastic,' the BJP's failure to present a strong contender against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a major issue. The RSS suggests that understanding Trinamool Congress's politics requires looking beyond schemes like 'Lakshmi Bhandar.'

One of the key weaknesses identified by the RSS is the BJP's lack of an 'acceptable and powerful' face to rival Mamata Banerjee. Additionally, the party suffers from a 'weak organization' and insufficient 'public dialogue.' These factors have contributed to its electoral failures.
In comparison to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, TMC's vote share in Bengal increased by about 2.5% in 2024, while the BJP's share decreased by around 1.5%. The RSS believes that a stronger organizational structure could have helped the BJP retain its six seats.
The RSS also sees potential for the BJP in Bengal despite recent setbacks. They note that even under adverse conditions, the party managed to secure 12 seats. This indicates that there is still a base of support that can be built upon for future elections.
The RSS editorial claims that Trinamool Congress's 'Revdi Politics' and appeasement strategies have helped solidify its vote bank. Additionally, the CPI(M)-Congress alliance has bolstered TMC's vote share as people perceive it as a stronger force against the BJP.
Looking ahead to the 2026 assembly elections, the RSS emphasizes that this will be a critical test for the BJP. The party needs to remove ineffective candidates and re-establish itself as a grassroots organization within the state.
The RSS article also highlights that some district presidents are unaware of basic organizational details like the number of booths in their districts. This lack of knowledge underscores the need for assigning responsibilities to more competent individuals.
Despite these challenges, there is hope for the BJP in Bengal. The party must focus on strengthening its organization and public engagement to improve its electoral prospects in future contests.
In summary, while the BJP faces significant hurdles in West Bengal, there are opportunities for growth and improvement. By addressing organizational weaknesses and enhancing public dialogue, the party can work towards better outcomes in upcoming elections.
