BJP Calls for Disqualification of Mandu MLA After Switch to Congress

In a significant political development from Ranchi on March 20, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for the disqualification of Mandu MLA Jai Prakash Bhai Patel. This move came shortly after Patel's switch to the Congress party was officially announced. The BJP's demand underscores the intensifying political dynamics in Jharkhand, highlighting the implications of anti-defection laws in Indian politics.

BJP Wants Mandu MLA Disqualified

Amar Kumar Bauri, the leader of the opposition and BJP legislator from Chandankiyari, addressed a letter to Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, outlining the basis for this demand. According to Bauri, Patel's election to the Mandu assembly seat was under the BJP symbol, which positions him as a member of the fifth Jharkhand legislative assembly. Furthermore, Patel held a significant role within the party as a whip.

The crux of Bauri's argument lies in the alleged violation of constitutional provisions by Patel through his affiliation with the Indian National Congress. This action, according to Bauri, falls squarely within the ambit of the anti-defection law. The letter explicitly requests Speaker Mahto to take prompt action against Patel in accordance with the 10th Schedule of the Constitution and the Disqualification Rules of 2006, seeking Patel's disqualification from assembly membership.

Patel's transition to Congress was formalized in New Delhi, witnessed by key figures including AICC in-charge for Jharkhand Ghulam Ahmad Mir, state president Rajesh Thakur, state minister Alamgir Alam, and Pawan Khera, head of the party's media and publicity department. It is noteworthy that Patel is not new to changing political allegiances; prior to his tenure with the BJP, he served as an MLA from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). His political career has seen him elected three times as MLA from Mandu, which is part of the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency.

This incident brings to light the ongoing challenges and controversies surrounding anti-defection laws in India. The BJP's swift demand for Patel's disqualification underscores the party's stance on maintaining legislative integrity and adherence to constitutional provisions. As this situation unfolds, it will be interesting to observe how it impacts political alignments and legislative processes within Jharkhand.
