Bihar Floor Test Today: Here’s How Numbers Stack Up

Nitish Kumar's JDU has exuded confidence about winning the trust vote during the floor test in the Bihar Assembly on Monday.

Two weeks ago, he had ditched the 'Mahagathbandhan' and returned to the NDA fold. He took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record ninth time on January 28. As the stage is set for the floor test, check how the numbers stack up in the Bihar Assembly:

Bihar: Here’s How Numbers Stack Up
  • In the Bihar Assembly, there are 243 seats and the majority mark is 122.
  • The BJP has 78 MLAs and the JDU has 45 lawmakers. The NDA also has the support of 4 from the Hindustani Awam Morcha, and an additional independent MLA, Sumit Singh.
  • This gives the NDA a comfortable majority of 128.
  • On the other side, there are a total of 114 seats, with the RJD leading with 79 seats. The Congress holds 19 seats, followed by CPI(ML) with 12, and both CPI(M) and CPI with 2 seats each.

Last Minute Twist Possible?

The BJP has kept all its MLAs in a resort located in Bodh Gaya before the floor test. The saffron party said that the MLAs were sent there for training purposes and that there was no concern about the Opposition attempting to lure them away.

The JDU has issued a three-line whip to its MLAs, asking them to remain present in the Assembly on Monday.

On the other hand, the Congress MLAs were housed in a resort in Hyderabad, while the RJD lawmakers stayed at Tejashwi Yadav's residence.

Although the numbers the NDA is expected to prove majority in the house, Tejashwi is hoping to give a last-minute twist to the story. It has to be noted that Media reports Sudharshan Kumar Singh, Bima Bharti and Dilip Roy had skipped the crucial JDU meeting on Sunday, as per the reports.

The session will kick off with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivering a joint address to both Houses at the Central Hall. Subsequently, there will be a discussion on the no-confidence notice against the Speaker. Following this, the Nitish government will seek a trust vote.
