CM Nitish Kumar to prove majority in Bihar trust vote tomorrow

In less than 24 hours, Nitish Kumar has returned as Bihar's chief minister, rekindling an old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. A floor test in Bihar assembly is scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 29 as Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi has given Nitish a two days test to prove his majority. Nitish, whose JD(U) has 71 lawmakers in the 243-member state assembly. With the BJP's support, Kumar's party now has 124 - one over the halfway mark.

On Thursday, Nitish took oath as Bihar Chief Minister with BJP as partner of his Janata Dal-United, within 24 hours of quitting the Grand Alliance. This is his second innings in the last two years. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered the oath of office to Nitish at the Raj Bhavan.

The "decision to form new government taken in the interest of Bihar, we will take the state to the path of prosperity," Kumar said after he was sworn in.

On Wednesday, Nitish unexpectedly resigned and hours later joined hands with BJP to reclaim the government in a stunning political manoeuvre that relegated his alliance partner RJD to the oppositon. The ostensible reason for Kumar to quit was his falling out with Deputy Chief Minister Teshaswi Yadav, the son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.

According to media reports, the JDU is likely to get a berth in the Union Cabinet. The Cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place in few weeks and JDU might also get an MoS berth.
