Bihar Elections 2025: NDA Triumphs With 202 Seats; Muslim Representation Falls to 11

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, held across two phases, recorded an impressive voter turnout of 66.91%, the highest since the state's first elections in 1951. The NDA secured a sweeping victory with 202 seats, with the BJP becoming the single largest party by winning 89 constituencies. The newly formed assembly will include 11 Muslim MLAs, reflecting a significant decline of eight members compared to the previous house. In 2015, Bihar elected 24 Muslim MLAs, while the number dropped to 19 in the 2020 assembly. The 2025 results indicate a further reduction in Muslim representation, marking a notable shift in the state's political landscape.

When it comes to party-wise distribution, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, fielded 23 Muslim candidates and won five seats, primarily from constituencies with a strong Muslim presence. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) nominated 18 Muslim candidates, of whom three emerged victorious. Congress fielded 10 Muslim candidates and secured two wins. Janata Dal (United) put forward four Muslim nominees and won one seat. Other parties such as CPI(M), Bahujan Samaj Party, and Jan Suraaj also fielded Muslim candidates, but none of them managed to win.

The list of Muslim MLAs elected includes Mohd Zama Khan of JD(U) from Chainpur; Faisal Rahman of the RJD from Dhaka; Asif Ahmad of the RJD from Bisfi; Osama Shahab of the RJD from Raghunathpur; and Congress leaders Abidur Rahman from Araria and Mohd. Qamrul Hoda from Kishanganj. AIMIM's five winners include Mohammad Murshid Aalam from Jokihat, Md Tauseef Alam from Bahadurganj, Mohd Sarwar Alam from Kochadhaman, Akhtarul Iman from Amour, and Ghulam Sarwar from Baisi.

One of the most closely fought contests occurred in Balrampur, where AIMIM candidate Advocate Adil Hasan lost to the BJP by just 389 votes, highlighting the intense electoral battles in several constituencies.

The broader electoral outcome shows the NDA winning 202 seats, with BJP securing 89, JD(U) winning 85, and Lok Janshakti Party taking 19 seats. The opposition alliance led by the RJD and Congress won a combined total of 35 seats, while AIMIM finished with five. The two-phase election, marked by historic voter participation and decisive results, also underscores a broader shift in Muslim political representation in Bihar, with votes increasingly spread across multiple parties and communities reassessing their political choices.
