Bihar Polls: NDA Holds Majority but INDIA Bloc Narrows Gap

In a significant electoral battle in Bihar, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerged with a strong showing, securing three-fourths of the state's 40 Lok Sabha seats. Despite this dominant performance, the NDA saw a slight retreat compared to its near-sweep in the previous elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) [JDU] each won 12 seats, while Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) clinched five victories.

NDA Leads, INDIA Bloc Gains in Bihar

Notably, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls had seen the BJP-led coalition winning 39 out of Bihar's 40 seats. This time around, the BJP boasted a vote share of 20.51 per cent, surpassing that of the JDU's 18.53 per cent. Despite contesting one more seat than the JDU, the BJP found its ally achieving a better strike rate, with seven JDU candidates winning by margins exceeding one lakh votes, compared to five from the BJP.

Raj Bhushan Chaudhary of the BJP recorded the largest victory margin in Muzaffarpur, defeating incumbent MP Ajay Nishad by 2.35 lakh votes. Union ministers Giriraj Singh and Nityanand Rai were among the prominent BJP victors, alongside veteran Rajiv Pratap Rudy who secured his third consecutive win in Saran.

Chirag Paswan had an impressive performance in Hajipur, winning by a margin of 1.70 lakh votes. His party members also saw comfortable wins across their contested seats. The opposition camp saw the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) achieving the highest vote share at 22.14 per cent but securing only four seats.

The Congress managed to retain Kishanganj and won back Katihar and Sasaram, with Tariq Anwar and newcomer Manoj Kumar emerging victorious respectively. The CPIML Liberation made significant gains by winning Arrah and Karakat, overturning expectations in these constituencies.

Purnea stood out by electing an Independent candidate, former MP Pappu Yadav, marking a departure from the dominance of major party alliances in the state. Yadav's victory over two-term JDU MP Abhay Kushwaha by approximately 24,000 votes highlighted the electorate's appetite for alternatives outside established political entities.

The elections in Bihar were marked by intense competition and controversies, including allegations of attacks on political convoys and spirited campaigns led by national leaders from both sides. Despite these challenges, the results reflect a complex political landscape in Bihar, with both established parties and emerging forces making their mark.
