Bihar Couple Arrested For Attempting To Sell Their Daughter In Odisha

In a distressing event from Odisha, a couple from Bihar was apprehended for trading their four-year-old daughter. The transaction, valued at Rs 40,000, was brought to a halt by the authorities in Bhubaneswar's Badagada area. The child was retrieved and the culprits, including the parents and four others implicated in the deal, have been taken into custody. This incident highlights a grave violation of child rights and underscores the desperate measures some resort to due to financial hardships.

The parents, caught in a dire financial predicament, chose to sell their daughter to a couple in Pipili who were unable to have children of their own. Operating as daily wage laborers within the jurisdiction of the Badagada police, their decision was driven by a pressing need for money. The police, upon being alerted to this heinous act, acted swiftly to ensure the child's safety and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Trupti Ranjan Nayak, the in-charge of Badagada Police Station, detailed the sequence of events leading to their intervention. "Today morning we received information from one Sarthak Mahadik that a Bihar couple residing in his home, have sold their four-year-old daughter. We have registered a case... The girl has been rescued from a village in the Pipli area. Six people have been detained and interrogation is going on." This statement underscores the collaborative effort between the community and the police in addressing such unlawful activities.

The investigation revealed that two intermediaries from Badagada had facilitated this illicit exchange, pointing to a larger network operating within the area. The parents' admission of their actions and the involvement of these intermediaries have shed light on the complexities surrounding child trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable families.

This case from Odisha serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which individuals may go when faced with financial destitution. Moreover, it underscores the importance of community vigilance and the role of law enforcement in protecting children from such egregious violations of their rights. The collective efforts of the police and the community in rescuing the child and apprehending those responsible highlight a critical step towards addressing and curbing such abuses.
