Bihar Caste Census Result Out: OBCs Make Up 63% Of Population, General Category Accounts For 16%

The Bihar government on Monday came out with the results of its caste-based survey, which has triggered controversy.

The report reveals that Bihar's total population exceeds 13 crores. Among the state's populace, the backward class constitutes 27.13 per cent, the extremely backward class makes up 36.01 per cent, and the general category accounts for 15.52 per cent.

Other specific caste percentages include Bhumihars at 2.86 per cent, Brahmins at 3.66 per cent, Kurmis at 2.87 per cent, Musahars at 3 per cent, and Yadavas at 14 per cent.

The announcement of these findings took place during a press conference led by Development Commissioner Vivek Singh, operating under the Chief Secretary's jurisdiction.

Despite facing legal challenges and opposition from certain political parties regarding the caste-based survey, the Bihar government maintained that the survey was vital for achieving social justice. The Supreme Court did not halt the exercise, permitting the state to proceed with its plans.

In response to the caste survey report, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated, "Today, on the auspicious occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the data from the caste-based census conducted in Bihar has been released. My heartiest congratulations to the entire team involved in the caste-based enumeration!"

He also added, "The caste-based census not only revealed the castes but also provided information about the economic conditions of all individuals. Based on this report, further actions will be taken for the development and upliftment of all sections."

RJD Chief Lalu Yadav also offered his reaction to the caste survey report.
