India is set to witness a nationwide strike, or 'Bharat Bandh', on Wednesday, February 12. Called by a coalition of major central trade unions and farmers' organisations, the bandh is a protest against key government policies impacting workers and agriculture.

Why is the Bandh Called?

The primary trigger is opposition to the government's four new labour codes, which unions argue dilute workers' rights, reduce job security, and favour employers. Protesters also demand the scrapping of several proposed bills, including the Draft Seed Bill and the Electricity Amendment Bill.

A major point of contention is the proposed India-US trade deal. Farmers' groups fear the pact could flood the market with cheap imports, severely damaging domestic agriculture and livelihoods.

Who is Supporting the Bandh?

The strike is organised by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, and CITU. They have been joined by powerful farmers' bodies like the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the All-India Kisan Sabha (AIKS). This combined front signals widespread discontent among both industrial and agricultural workers.

What Will Be Closed or Affected?

Banking Services: Operations at public sector banks are likely to be significantly impacted. Major unions like the All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) have joined the strike. While online banking and ATMs should function, branch services, cheque clearance, and cash transactions may face delays or disruptions. Private banks may operate but services could vary.

Transport & Shops: While no uniform mandate exists, disruptions in road transport are possible in areas with strong union support. Shops and commercial establishments in many states may remain shut as a mark of protest.

Government & Offices: Government offices in several regions may see reduced attendance or temporary closure. Some private sector units may also remain shut.

What Will Remain Open?

Essential Services: Hospitals, ambulance services, and utilities like electricity and water supply are expected to function normally.

Air Travel: Airports and airlines will operate as usual, though passengers should account for possible road delays en route to airports.

Schools & Colleges: No nationwide closure has been declared. However, some states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Odisha may see localised shutdowns if transport is hit. Parents should check official notices from their institutions.

App-Based Cabs: Services like Ola and Uber are likely to operate, especially as the bandh's core issues are not directly related to them. They may even see higher demand if public transport is affected.
