The BJP-led NDA government launched 'Bharat Rice' at a subsidised rate of Rs 29 per kilogram to provide relief to consumers amid a 15 per cent rise in retail prices of the grain in the last one year.
In the initial phase, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will allocate 5 lakh tonnes of rice to two cooperatives-National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF)-along with the retail chain Kendriya Bhandar.
These entities will further package the rice into 5 kg and 10 kg units, branding them under the 'Bharat' label, and distributing them through their respective outlets. Additionally, the rice will be made available for purchase on various e-commerce platforms.
It's noteworthy that the government is already retailing 'Bharat Atta' at Rs 27.50 per kg and 'Bharat Dal' (chana) at Rs 60 per kg. The rice bags will be offered in both 5 kg and 10 kg variants.
To address rising rice prices, the government has implemented several measures. The FCI, holding an ample stock of high-quality rice, is making it available to traders and wholesalers under OMSS at a reserve price of Rs 29/kg. Moreover, the government has reduced the Reserve Price of rice from Rs. 3100/Qtl to Rs. 2900/Qtl and adjusted the minimum and maximum quantity of rice to 1 MT and 2000 MT, respectively. Additionally, FCI regional offices are actively promoting rice sales through extensive publicity efforts. As a result, rice sales have seen a gradual increase, with 1.66 LMT rice sold in the open market as of January 31, 2024, marking the highest sales figure in any year under OMSS (D) for rice.
