Delhi Government Responds to Bharadwaj's Call for Action Against DUSIB Officer Vijay Maggo

The Delhi government revealed that Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had previously called for disciplinary measures against Vijay Maggo, a legal officer with the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), but no action was taken. This statement came on Friday following Maggo's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly accepting a bribe.

Bharadwaj Calls for Action on DUSIB Officer

Maggo, along with a middleman, was apprehended by the CBI for reportedly taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to unseal two shops belonging to a businessman. The legal officer was accused of demanding a total bribe of Rs 40 lakh from the complainant, purportedly on behalf of another DUSIB officer, to ensure the shops could operate without hindrance.

Allegations and Internal Disputes

The Delhi government highlighted that DUSIB's CEO had previously sought to promote Maggo to the position of law officer. An agenda for this promotion was presented to the DUSIB board in March 2024. However, this proposal was rejected by both Saurabh Bharadwaj, the vice-chairman of the board, and Arvind Kejriwal, who was the chairman at that time.

In April, Bharadwaj addressed a letter to the Union home secretary detailing corrupt practices related to the desealing of DUSIB properties. He pointed out issues such as misuse of power, withholding crucial information, and misrepresentation of facts. Despite these concerns being raised, no disciplinary action was taken against Maggo.

Government's Stance on Corruption

The Delhi government's statement emphasised that Bharadwaj had explicitly recommended disciplinary action against Maggo. However, it claimed that these recommendations were ignored. The situation has brought attention to internal conflicts and allegations of corruption within DUSIB.

The case has raised questions about accountability and governance within DUSIB. The government's statement suggests a need for stricter oversight and transparency in handling such matters. As investigations continue, there is anticipation regarding further developments in this case.
