Beyond Rajdhani: Vande Bharat Sleeper Train With Enhanced Features To Hit The Tracks Soon

In the coming months, Indian Railways is set to introduce the first sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express. The production of the inaugural prototype for the Vande Bharat sleeper train commenced at the end of October last year, with expectations for it to be operational in February or March 2024.

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) is collaborating with the Indian Railways Integral Coach Factory to manufacture this new sleeper train, anticipated to surpass the comfort standards set by the Rajdhani Express.

Key features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train include:

• Enhanced side cushioning on berths for improved passenger comfort, facilitating ease of movement during sleep or rest.
• Superior cushioning and berth comfort when compared to Rajdhani Express trains.
• Upgraded ladder design for easier access to upper berths.
• Enhanced couplers for smoother rides.
• Interior aesthetics in cream, yellow, and wood tones for an improved ambient feel.
• Sensor-equipped common area lighting.
• Improved night lighting on the floor with aisle strips for easy navigation.
• Energy-efficient overhead lighting.
• Spill-prevention features in washbasins.

Additional notable features of the train include:

• Aerodynamically designed headlights inspired by eagle bird eyes.
• High-quality interiors featuring Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) panels.
• Intercommunication doors with sensors.
• Automated passenger doors on the exterior.
• Modular pantry.
• Dedicated berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers.
• Public announcement and visual information systems.
• Odor-free and ergonomically designed toilet system.
• Ample space for luggage.

The Vande Bharat Express sleeper version will operate as a self-propelled distributed power train with a speed potential of 160 kmph. Its enhanced acceleration and deceleration capabilities aim to reduce travel time, particularly beneficial for overnight journeys.
