Bengaluru bus strike: Metro sees surge in commuters

Bengaluru, July 26: The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Monday saw an increase in commuters owing to the bus strike that affected normal life in the city.

According to data provided by BMRCL; the Line 2 of the Namma Metro from Nagasandra to Mantri Square, Sampige Road witnessed about 30% increase in commuters as opposed to the statistics of July 18. However, Line 1 (Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road Terminal) failed to attract more commuters and in fact experienced a dip.

On Line 1 till 10 AM, the number of commuters jumped to 24% but after that, there was a steady decrease in the number of passengers. The frequency of rail services till 10 am was in every 5 minutes. BMRCL attribute the fall in commuters after 10 AM to the holiday forcing schools and colleges to be shut.

After 10 AM, Rail Corporation changed the frequency of the trains to every 10 minutes due to slump in users. This frequency was maintained till 5 PM at Baiyappanahalli Metro Station and 5.35 PM at Mysuru Road Terminal.

Following this the frequency of the trains was increased to every 5 minutes till 9 PM. Line 1 witnessed 1, 18,481 commuters till 10 pm as opposed to the 1, 21,637 passengers who commuted via the Metro on July 18.

Line 2 that operated trains at a frequency of every 10 minutes saw a 30% rise in passengers as opposed to July 18. "This road connects industrial hubs and this is a key reason for the climb," BMRCL said. The total number of commuters till 10 PM was 44,511 as against 36,083 on Juy 18.

The total number of users, put together for Line 1 and Line 2 for July 25 was 1, 62,992 and for July 18 it was 1, 57,720.
