Bengal Train Accident: Here Are The Helpline Numbers

The Sealdah Eastern Railway sets up a control desk at Rangapani station after the Kanchenjunga Express train rammed by a goods train at Ruidhasa in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

At approximately 8 am, a goods train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express, which was travelling from Agartala in Tripura to Sealdah station in Kolkata. Following the collision, at least two carriages of the passenger train derailed.

The train, which runs between Sealdah in West Bengal and Silchar in Assam, was crowded due to the peak tourist season, with thousands visiting hill stations in northern Bengal and neighbouring Sikkim.

"10 buses of North Bengal Rashtriya Paribahan Nigam have left for the accident site to rescue stranded passengers of the Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express. Also, additional bus services from Siliguri-Kolkata from Siliguri Tenzing Norgay bus terminus will be operational from this afternoon," says Partha Pratim Roy, Chairman, North Bengal Rashtriya Paribahan Nigam (NBSTC).

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and Divisional Railway officials have swiftly arrived at the accident site, along with 15 ambulances and medical supplies.

Railway officials are currently assessing the situation. The incident occurred at Rangapani area within the Katihar Railway Division, just before reaching New Jalpaiguri Junction, around 8:45 am today.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the accident took place in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.

"Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train," Mamata Banerjee said in a post on X.

"The DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated," the West Bengal chief minister said.
