Bengal Government Strengthens Security Measures for Doctors Amid Supreme Court Concerns

The West Bengal government is actively working to enhance security for doctors in state-run hospitals, with results expected soon, according to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant. On Monday, Pant addressed the concerns of junior doctors who are protesting, urging them to remain patient. The Supreme Court had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress in installing CCTVs and constructing facilities in medical colleges.

Bengal Government Enhances Doctors Security

The court directed the state to complete these tasks by October 15. Pant assured that efforts are underway across various locations, with some areas having completed 30% of the work and others 70%. He emphasised that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is personally overseeing the situation. "It's a collaborative effort and I am sure the results will be visible. We should not be impatient," he stated.

Security Measures and Government Efforts

Pant appealed to the junior doctors to continue providing proper services, highlighting their education and professionalism. He expressed confidence that they understand their responsibilities towards patients. The government has not yet received formal notification of the Supreme Court's observations but remains committed to addressing the issues raised.

Junior doctors began their protest on August 9 following the discovery of a medic's body at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The medic was allegedly raped and murdered, sparking demands for improved security and removal of certain officials in the police and health departments. The state government has engaged in multiple discussions with the doctors regarding these demands.

Protests and Ongoing Negotiations

After a 42-day hiatus, junior doctors partially resumed duties on September 21. However, tensions escalated when three doctors and three nurses were assaulted after a patient's death at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital near Kolkata on Friday night. This incident prompted doctors to consider resuming a complete work stoppage.

On Saturday night, they announced plans for a total cease work in medical colleges across the state, contingent on the state's submission to the Supreme Court on Monday. As of 10 PM Monday, junior doctors were still deliberating on their decision regarding the complete work stoppage.

The government remains hopeful that junior doctors will continue serving patients effectively while ongoing improvements are made. Pant reiterated that such developments require time but assured that progress is being made diligently.
