West Bengal Government Mandates Directives to Enhance Security for Healthcare Professionals

The West Bengal government has issued directives to enhance the safety and working conditions for healthcare professionals. These measures were announced following discussions with junior doctors who had raised concerns. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant communicated these directives to Principal Secretary Health NS Nigam, emphasising immediate implementation.

Bengal Issues Directives for Healthcare Security

Security Measures in Healthcare Facilities

Among the key directives is the appointment of former DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha to conduct security audits in medical institutions. The government has instructed that adequate police presence, including female officers, be ensured at all healthcare facilities. Local police are also tasked with deploying mobile teams for night-time surveillance.

Healthcare facilities must have on-duty rooms, washrooms, CCTVs, and drinking water readily available. The state aims to complete these improvements swiftly. A centralised helpline and panic button system should be operational soon to ensure the safety of healthcare staff.

Operational Enhancements and Staffing

The health department is directed to create a real-time bed availability system across government facilities. This information should be prominently displayed for public access. Additionally, a central referral system is to be established promptly.

Efforts are underway to fill vacant positions for doctors, nurses, general duty assistants (GDAs), and technicians. The directive stresses the importance of having a fully functional internal complaints committee within the department.

Grievance Redressal and Collaboration

A robust grievance redressal mechanism is to be developed to address complaints from patients and stakeholders efficiently. The state government emphasises that all involved parties must collaborate to provide quality healthcare services.

In its final remarks, the government reiterated the importance of unity among stakeholders in delivering effective healthcare to West Bengal's residents.
