Over 100,000 Evacuated in Bengal as Cyclone Remal Approaches Coastal Areas

In a significant move to safeguard lives against the severe cyclone Remal, the West Bengal government has undertaken a massive evacuation operation, moving over 110,000 individuals from vulnerable coastal areas to safer locations. This initiative, aimed at mitigating the impact of the impending cyclonic storm, has seen extensive collaboration between state disaster management teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), with 16 battalions deployed across critical regions.

Focus areas for this evacuation include the South 24 Parganas district, with notable emphasis on Sagar Island, Sunderbans, and Kakdwip. Additional regions such as Kakdwip, Namkhana, Diamond Harbour, and Raichawk have also seen inhabitants moved to secure shelters. South 24 Parganas district magistrate Sumit Gupta highlighted the comprehensive measures in place to confront the storm's challenges, emphasizing the readiness of police, disaster management personnel, and volunteers to tackle any arising situation.

To further bolster preparedness, the state government has distributed approximately 540,000 tarpaulins and ensured the availability of essential supplies like dry ration, powdered milk, and drinking water pouches across affected districts. A centralised control unit at the state secretariat is closely monitoring the evolving situation, complemented by district-level control units in Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, and Nadia.

The meteorological department has reported that cyclone Remal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to make landfall between Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight on Sunday. Wind speeds are anticipated to range from 110-120 km per hour with gusts up to 135 kmph. Coastal districts brace for extremely heavy rainfall while Kolkata and surrounding areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In response to these forecasts, advisories have been issued in coastal areas like Digha, Shankarpur, and Tajpur urging tourists to vacate hotels and avoid sea ventures. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reassured residents through a post on X, emphasizing the government's readiness to support them during this period.

In Kolkata, proactive measures have been taken by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities under Mayor Firhad Hakim's guidance. Evacuations from high rises and vulnerable buildings have been executed with displaced individuals being accommodated in Adarsha Hindu schools among other shelters. Preparations include mobilizing 15,000 civic employees for post-cyclone scenarios and positioning cranes and JCBs for quick removal of debris. The mayor cited lessons learned from Cyclone Amphan as instrumental in current preparedness efforts.

Kolkata Police has established a unified command centre to coordinate emergency responses involving multiple agencies. Additionally, helpline numbers have been made available for citizens requiring assistance during this period.

This concerted effort by various arms of the West Bengal government underscores a comprehensive approach to disaster management. With meticulous planning and coordination among state departments and agencies, West Bengal aims to minimize the impact of cyclone Remal on its residents and infrastructure.
