Bengal CID Launches Investigation into Administration of Expired Intravenous Fluids at State Hospital

The West Bengal CID questioned medical staff at a state-run hospital after a woman's death and three others became critically ill post-childbirth. The incident involved alleged expired intravenous fluid. Senior CID officers visited Medinipur Medical College and Hospital in Paschim Medinipore district to investigate the matter.

Bengal CID Probes Expired IV Fluid Case

On January 9, the CID interrogated the Resident Medical Officer (RMO), two junior doctors, and four nurses who were on duty at the gynaecology department. They also spoke with four post-graduate trainees who conducted surgeries that evening. An official mentioned that the RMO was asked about his absence during the incident.

Investigation and Findings

The CID officers inquired if the RMO had guided junior doctors on treatment procedures and medications given to patients. They also interviewed family members of the deceased and those critically ill after childbirth. The CID plans to submit its initial findings to the state government within three days, according to sources.

Meanwhile, an official from the state's health department reported that the condition of the three women receiving treatment at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata remains critical. In response, the department released a list of 14 additional medicines from West Bengal Pharmaceutical not to be used in state hospitals as a precautionary measure.

Parallel Investigation

A 13-member committee was previously established by the state government to conduct a parallel investigation into the incident. Their preliminary report suggests human error and side effects from other medications contributed to the situation, as stated by an official.

The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine all factors involved in this tragic event. The focus remains on ensuring patient safety and preventing similar occurrences in the future.
