Bellandur lake: Will this promise too go up in foam?

New Delhi, Dec 24: Will this promise too go up in foam? This is a question that the residents around the Bellandur lake have to ask. The newly appointed chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Lakshman visited the Bellandur lake area where there is formation of foam as a result of pollution.

During his visit, he has proposed several measures and even added that he would study how much of waste is discharged into the catchment area. He also assured that he would check on the encroachments while also adding that the rejuvenation of the Bellandur lake is his top priority.

On the other hand there has been a proposal to construct a ramp at the lake. It is felt that the construction of this ramp so that foam is not generated. This was informed to reporters by the chief engineer of BWSSB (waste water treatment) Ramakrishna.

He says that the ramp would be built by June 2016 and this would help the water to flow instead of falling. He assured that once this ramp which would be a gentle incline will be constructed the formation of the foam would stop.

A sewage treatment plant (STP) is being constructed at the Challaghatta valley which will be completed by 2016. This plant would ensure that the Bellandur lake is clear from pollutants, he also said.

However the residents of the area are not overjoyed as yet. They have a reason to be skeptical as they have been hearing such promises since the past year. Residents say that they have seen several officials come and go. They all assure us of cleaning up this mess, but never live up to their word.

However this time around there has been a lot of awareness and it appears that the officials will work. We cannot live in this stink and hazard anymore, the residents say. Let us see if this time around the promises are fulfilled says Jayanthi, a resident of the area.
