The Begusarai Assembly constituency has emerged as one of the most high-stakes battles in the upcoming Bihar Assembly Election 2025, witnessing a fierce contest between BJP's Kundan Kumar from the NDA and Congress's Amita Bhushan representing the Mahagathbandhan.

The face-off between these two influential figures has stirred considerable political buzz in the industrial and educational hub of Begusarai, known as the "Manchester of Bihar."

Kundan Kumar: MLA and Professional with Strong Political Standing

Kundan Kumar, aged 48, is the NDA's key face in Begusarai, contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. The son of Upendra Prasad Singh, he has built his profile as both an MLA and a professional consultant, balancing his political career with his business and consultancy ventures. A Post-Graduate in Management (Human Resource and Industrial Relations) from the 2002-2004 batch, Kundan Kumar represents a blend of administrative experience and entrepreneurial skill.

According to his election affidavit, Kumar has declared assets worth over ₹13 crore and liabilities around ₹50 lakh. His latest income tax filings show an annual income of about ₹40.7 lakh in FY 2024-25, indicating consistent earnings from consultancy and agricultural ventures. He has declared one pending case under IPC sections related to election influence and public order, but no convictions to date.

His declared properties include extensive agricultural and non-agricultural land in Bihar and real estate holdings in Pune, including flats and an office space. Among movable assets, he owns vehicles such as a Toyota Fortuner and Innova Crysta, gold jewellery, licensed arms, and multiple bank deposits. With a mix of rural roots and urban exposure, Kumar has positioned himself as a development-oriented candidate who promises modern infrastructure and industry-led job creation.

In his campaign speeches, Kundan Kumar has repeatedly highlighted his commitment to transforming Begusarai into an industrial hub and improving employment opportunities for youth. "Begusarai deserves the next stage of growth, not just promises but performance," he told voters at a recent rally.

Amita Bhushan: Congress's Educator-Turned-Politician Championing Social Causes

On the other side, Amita Bhushan, representing the Indian National Congress (INC) from the Mahagathbandhan alliance, is giving a tough fight. A 54-year-old postgraduate in Psychology from L.N. Mithila University, she has transitioned from teaching to full-time politics, carrying forward her image as a social reformer and women's rights advocate.

Amita Bhushan's affidavit reveals assets valued at ₹6.38 crore with liabilities of ₹74.21 lakh. Her declared annual income for FY 2024-25 stands at ₹7.8 lakh, while her spouse, a retired central government officer, declared an income of ₹28.3 lakh. She faces three pending cases, mostly related to election activities and public protests, but has no convictions recorded.

Her financial declaration showcases extensive investments in mutual funds, shares, postal deposits, and life insurance policies, along with real estate properties in Patna, Begusarai, and Uttar Pradesh. Known for her active role in Congress's women's wing, Bhushan has built her campaign around the issues of women's safety, urban development, employment generation, and transparency in welfare delivery.

Speaking during a recent rally, she remarked, "Begusarai needs inclusive development - one that empowers women, creates jobs, and makes governance accountable to every citizen."

Begusarai's Electoral Dynamics: Industry, Caste, and Urban Challenges

Begusarai has long been a politically significant seat, driven by its industrial economy and complex caste arithmetic. The constituency hosts a mix of Bhumihars, Yadavs, Muslims, and Kurmis, making it one of the most demographically diverse seats in Bihar. While the BJP banks on its traditional upper-caste and OBC support, the Mahagathbandhan alliance, led by Congress and RJD, aims to consolidate minority and backward-class voters behind Bhushan.

Analysts suggest that urban issues, such as unemployment, poor infrastructure, and civic management, may dominate voter sentiment this time.
