Ratan Tata's Mantra: Be No. 1 or Be Wiped Out, Says Former Aide RN Sharma
Ratan Tata's journey was marked by humility and friendship, according to RN Sharma, former Chairman of Coal India. Sharma, who turned 100 on April 12, reflected on his experiences with Tata, highlighting his commitment to quality and integrity. As a former Vice President of Tata Steel and Managing Director of Tata Tinplate, Sharma shared insights into their relationship.

Sharma first met Ratan Tata in the late 1960s while serving as Chief Mining Engineer at Jamadoba. He recalled meeting a young Ratan Tata in 1967-68, describing him as curious and determined. Their initial professional encounter soon evolved into a lasting friendship. Sharma described Tata's visit to the mines as the beginning of a bond that would endure for decades.
Memorable Experiences with Ratan Tata
During Tata's two-week visit, Sharma had the opportunity to guide him through mining operations. They shared both challenges and successes of the industry. Their evenings were filled with conversations about future visions and shared values. This period marked the start of a deep connection between them.
Sharma worked with the Tata Group from 1949 to 1997, except for a decade when he led Coal India. Upon returning to the group, he felt a sense of homecoming that rekindled their bond. He fondly remembered Ratan Tata's mantra: "Be number one or be ready to be wiped out." This philosophy encouraged aiming high and striving for excellence.
Ratan Tata's Leadership Style
Ratan Tata was known for his humility and lack of pretension. Sharma recounted an evening at Bombay House when Ratan joined him in a hired car without hesitation. This gesture exemplified his modesty and showed that true greatness doesn't require showmanship.
Dr T Mukherjee, former Deputy Managing Director at Tata Steel, highlighted Ratan Tata's visionary leadership. He inspired employees to aim for global standards, encouraging competition with top steel producers like Japan and Germany. Mukherjee noted that meetings often extended past midnight due to Tata's dedication.
Impact on Employees
Tata Steel workers revered Ratan Tata, considering him a guiding figure who ensured fair wages above industry norms. His leadership left a lasting impact on those who worked under him, fostering a culture of excellence and integrity within the company.
Reflecting on their journey together, Sharma expressed admiration for Ratan Tata's influence not only on the Tata Group but also on everyone who knew him. His legacy continues to inspire others to pursue excellence and lead with humility.
