The election for the Vice-President's post has now turned into a battle of South. According to the reports, the Opposition INDIA Bloc is considering DMK veteran and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its pick for Vice President.

Tiruchi Siva, if finalised, will face off against the NDA's choice - Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP face from Tamil Nadu. The final call is likely to be made at a meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi. Voting is slated for September 9.

Why Tamil Nadu Matters

The contest is less about personalities and more about messaging. By fielding Radhakrishnan, the BJP is attempting to reinforce its growing presence in Tamil Nadu, a state where it has traditionally struggled. The INDIA bloc, however, sees an opportunity to counter this narrative by backing Siva, a seasoned parliamentarian with deep roots in Dravidian politics.

For the DMK, the stakes are particularly high. Party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan dismissed the BJP's choice as "tokenism," arguing that the Centre has consistently failed to support Tamil Nadu's developmental needs. The BJP, on the other hand, is presenting Radhakrishnan as a proud Tamil representative, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself praising his community service and intellect.

A Sudden Vacancy

The election was necessitated by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar's unexpected resignation, officially attributed to health concerns. Yet, whispers of internal friction with the BJP add a layer of intrigue, making this vacancy more politically charged than usual.
