Bareilly Violence: Cleric Among 25+ Detained as ‘I Love Muhammad’ Protest Turns Violent

Violence erupted in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, after a protest near a mosque in support of the 'I Love Muhammad' campaign, initiated by Maulana Tauqeer Raza. Tensions escalated between protesters and police, causing panic among locals. Some protesters began pelting stones, prompting the police to use force to regain control.

Maulana Tauqeer Raza initially planned the protest without official permission, but later called it off at the last minute. His decision angered supporters who gathered near his residence and a nearby mosque with banners. Authorities had placed Raza under house arrest before the protests began.

Police Response and Investigation

Bareilly police reported that the situation is now under control, with several individuals detained. DIG AK Sahni stated that visual evidence points to a "premeditated conspiracy." Law enforcement had urged peaceful prayers, but violence erupted when agitators appeared suddenly.

District Magistrate Avinash Singh clarified that an organization had proposed a march to submit a memorandum in support of the protest. However, permission under section 163 of the BNSS was required, and the march was not approved.

Details of the Clashes

As police attempted to disperse the crowd, some individuals vandalized vehicles near Khalil Higher Secondary School, escalating tensions further. Police used lathi charge to manage the situation effectively.

Sahni reported that while Friday prayers were peaceful in most areas, disturbances occurred at three to four locations, injuring over 10 police officers. Investigations suggest a large group appeared suddenly, seemingly prepared for confrontation.

The district magistrate assured strict action against unauthorized protesters and urged citizens not to believe rumors.
