A 17-year-old girl in Bareilly, UP was thrown before a train by a youth after she objected to sexual harassment. She suffered severe injuries including the loss of one hand and both legs. Her condition is critical.

In a shocking incident that transpired in the CB Ganj area of Bareilly City, Uttar Pradesh on October 11th, a seventeen-year-old girl was thrown before an oncoming train by a youth from her village. The heinous act was reportedly committed as retaliation for the girl's objections to sexual harassment. As reported by the police, she lost one hand and both legs in this terrifying ordeal and is currently battling for life with multiple fractures.

The accused individual, Vijay Maurya, allegedly accosted the young victim while she was returning home from her coaching centre around 4:30 PM. According to her father's statement to the police, Maurya engaged in indecent conversation and harassed his daughter. Furthermore, another local youth witnessed Maurya following her shortly after their encounter.

Following these allegations, Vijay Maurya has been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder (307), forcibly restraining someone (342), intentional insult (504), outraging modesty of women (354D) and causing grievous hurt by dangerous means (326). He is also being prosecuted under sections of Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act(POCSO). Both Vijay Maurya and his father Krishna Pal have been taken into custody regarding this case.

Despite attempts at escaping towards Khadau by the victim who is an intermediate student according to her father’s report; she was forcefully pushed onto railway tracks resulting in severe injuries leading to amputation of both legs below knee level and one hand. Found near Khadau railway crossing in a critical state following this brutal attack; she was immediately rushed to a private hospital where immediate surgical procedures were performed.

Her distressed father shared that despite raising concerns about his daughter’s safety previously with Maurya's family no actions were taken. He also accused the local police of negligence as his previous complaints were ostensibly ignored and no investigations were conducted in their village.

The severity of this incident led to the suspension of three policemen for alleged negligence, namely Inspector in-charge Ashok Kumar Kamboj, sub-inspector Nitesh Kumar Sharma, and beat constable Akashdeep. A departmental inquiry has been ordered against them by Senior Superintendent of Police Chandrabhan. SP City Rahul Bhati is now assigned with the responsibility to probe into this case.

Bareilly District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar informed media that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of this gruesome incident and announced financial assistance worth Rs 5 lakh for the victim's family. In light of her critical condition, she is being transferred to a higher medical facility with all treatment costs borne by the government.

Expressing concern over her health status, Hospital Director Dr OP Bhaskar stated that her condition is worrisome due to loss of limbs from amputation. Meanwhile, senior administration officials visited her at hospital extending their support during these trying times.

In conclusion, while law enforcement agencies have initiated action against those responsible; it is crucial that systemic changes are implemented promptly at grassroots level to ensure safety and security for women across India. This tragic event underscores an urgent need for stringent measures against sexual harassment and violence towards women which remains a pervasive issue within our society today.
