Bank Holiday Today: Banks Are Open Or Closed On January 23?
Bank Holiday Today: Banks across West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura will not open their doors on January 23 due to the celebrations of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birthday and Vir Surendra Sai Jayanti. These closures are in line with the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) schedule, which adheres to various legislation including the Negotiable Instruments Act and the RTGS holidays. This decision affects both public and private sector banking institutions, restricting their operations exclusively in these three states, as per the official announcements made by the RBI.
January 23 marks the observance of Parakram Diwas, in honor of the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a pivotal figure in India's fight for independence. The Indian government formally proposed the celebration of Parakram Diwas in 2021. Vir Surendra Sai, whose Jayanti coincides with this day, is celebrated for his resistance against British control and his claim to the throne of Sambalpur State in Odisha following British intervention.

Digital Banking Unaffected by Physical Closures
Despite the temporary shutdown of bank branches in certain states, customers can still access financial services through digital channels. Online banking, mobile banking, and UPI platforms will operate as usual, ensuring no disruption to banking activities. Nonetheless, during extended bank holidays, there might be a shortage of cash in ATMs. To avoid inconvenience, bank customers are encouraged to check their online banking setup and ensure it is functional and linked to their mobile numbers.
Variability in Bank Holidays Across India
Bank holidays in India are not uniform and can vary significantly depending on the state. While specific holidays depend on local festivals and events, all banks across the country observe a standard closure on the second and fourth Saturdays each month. However, banks are open for business on any fifth Saturday that might occur. Beyond state-specific holidays, banks nationwide are closed on major national holidays, including Republic Day on January 26, Independence Day on August 15, and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.
