West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Launches Banglar Bari Housing Scheme for 12 Lakh Beneficiaries

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticised the central government for not providing funds for the Awas Yojana over the past three years. In response, she introduced Banglar Bari, a housing scheme fully financed by the state. Banerjee mentioned that a survey identified over 28 lakh eligible beneficiaries who will receive Rs 1.2 lakh each by December.

Mamata Banerjee Launches Banglar Bari Scheme

On Tuesday, Rs 60,000 was deposited into the bank accounts of 12 lakh beneficiaries as the first instalment. "My life is dedicated to working for people. Today, in the interest of the people of rural Bengal, I launched the Banglar Bari project," Banerjee stated. She emphasised that this initial payment aims to assist in building houses.

State Government's Initiative

The Chief Minister highlighted that both the Centre and state conducted surveys, with the Centre surveying around 36 lakh families. The state verified claims and objections, finalising a list of over 28 lakh beneficiaries. Banerjee accused the central government of failing to keep its promises, depriving poor residents of their rightful dues.

Banerjee expressed her determination to ensure that all identified families receive their funds. She stated that if the Centre does not contribute, the state will cover payments for the remaining 16 lakh families. Eight lakh will be paid by May-June and another eight lakh by December in two instalments.

Financial Commitment

The financial burden on West Bengal for this initiative is significant, with an estimated total cost of Rs 14,773 crore. Banerjee also mentioned an outstanding amount of Rs 24,000 crore from the Centre for this purpose. Despite these challenges, she remains committed to fulfilling the state's obligations.

During a ceremony, Banerjee handed approval letters to 42 beneficiaries from 21 districts. She reiterated her stance: "We want our rights to be fulfilled; we are not beggars." This statement underscores her commitment to securing funds for West Bengal's residents.

The Banglar Bari scheme reflects West Bengal's efforts to address housing needs independently amid financial constraints and lack of central support. The initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring housing for those in need across rural areas.
