Bangladesh Repatriates 95 Indian Fishermen While India Releases 90 Bangladeshi Fishermen
On Sunday, Bangladesh returned 95 Indian fishermen to India, while New Delhi released 90 Bangladeshi fishermen. This exchange occurred amid tense relations between the two nations. The decision to release these fishermen was jointly announced by both governments on Thursday. The Indian Coast Guard and the Bangladesh Coast Guard coordinated the exchange.

The Bangladeshi authorities handed over 95 fishermen and four fishing vessels to the Indian Coast Guard. Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard released 90 Bangladeshi fishermen, including 12 who were rescued from a sunken fishing boat named Kaushik. "Indian fishermen are being handed over to West Bengal State fisheries authorities at South 24 Parganas post repatriation from Bangladesh," stated the Indian Coast Guard.
Coast Guards Facilitate Fishermen Exchange
In recent months, several Indian fishermen have been detained by Bangladeshi authorities after accidentally crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line into Bangladeshi waters. Similarly, Indian authorities have apprehended numerous Bangladeshi fishermen under comparable circumstances. These incidents have contributed to the strained relations between the two countries.
The diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh have been under pressure since Muhammad Yunus's interim government assumed power. India has raised concerns about attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. The situation worsened last month when Bangladesh's interim government sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi, requesting the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Political Tensions Affect Diplomatic Relations
Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since August after fleeing Bangladesh due to large-scale anti-government protests. This development has further strained the already delicate relationship between the two nations. Despite these tensions, both countries managed to coordinate the release of fishermen through their respective coast guards.
The reciprocal repatriation of fishermen is a significant step towards easing tensions between India and Bangladesh. It demonstrates a willingness to cooperate on humanitarian grounds despite ongoing political disagreements. The exchange highlights the importance of maintaining open communication channels even during challenging times.
