Bakrid 2025: Kerala Government Reschedules Public Holiday To Saturday, June 7
The Kerala government has officially revised the date for the Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) public holiday, shifting it from Friday, June 6, to Saturday, June 7, 2025. The move comes after updated information confirmed that Bakrid will be celebrated on Saturday across the state.
Initially, the government had declared June 6 as a public holiday for the festival. However, following clarifications about the actual date of observance, the earlier notification was withdrawn. A new order has been issued designating June 7 as the official holiday. As a result, June 6 will now be treated as a regular working day.

The revised public holiday will apply to all state government offices, public sector enterprises, educational institutions including professional colleges, and establishments governed by the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
The government stated that the adjustment was necessary to ensure the holiday aligns with the actual celebration date, enabling the public to observe the occasion in accordance with tradition.
However, the last-minute change has drawn criticism from the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), affiliated with the Indian Union Muslim League. MSF state president PK Navas took to Facebook to express disappointment, calling the move "extremely shameful." In his post, he urged the government to uphold the inclusive spirit Kerala is known for, saying, "If you cannot protect us, at least do not harass us; if you cannot give, do not take away."
The episode has triggered broader debate over how sensitively and consistently religious holidays are handled by the state government. Many have called for better communication and coordination in the future to avoid confusion and ensure respect for community sentiments.
