#RamRajyaKaDeepotsav: Ayodhya’s Festival of Light Showcases India’s Cultural and Spiritual Renaissance

As dusk settles over Ayodhya this October, the ghats of the sacred Saryu River will come alive with millions of flickering lamps a sight that captures the very soul of India. From 19 to 23 October 2025, the city will host the grand Deepotsav celebrations, marking the homecoming of Lord Ram with light, music and devotion. The spirit of #RamRajyaKaDeepotsav will illuminate every corner, celebrating the ideals of truth, faith, and dharma.

This year, Uttar Pradesh is preparing for its most spectacular Deepotsav yet, with a Guinness world-record attempt to light over 2.6 million diyas across 56 ghats. The event, described by officials as "history in lights", will see Ayodhya glow like never before, a living canvas of faith and unity visible from the skies above.

But Deepotsav 2025 is far more than a festival - it is a reflection of how Uttar Pradesh has transformed under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Once known for its challenges, the state now stands proudly as the cultural heart of India, attracting visitors from across the world to witness its renewed spirit and grandeur.

A Celebration of Light, Faith and Innovation

This year's Deepotsav perfectly unites tradition and technology. Ramkatha Park will come alive with performances by renowned Indian artists, joined by Ramleela troupes from Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Nepal - transforming Ayodhya into a global stage for cultural exchange.

A group of 100 children will form a vibrant Vanar Sena, joyfully recreating Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya as they descend from a symbolic Pushpak Viman.

Drone displays, projection mapping and eco-friendly fireworks will lend a modern sparkle to this timeless tale, weaving devotion and visual artistry into one unforgettable experience.

Visitors can explore animated scenes from the Ramayana through the new Deepotsav AR App at key points along Ram ki Paidi, while the Divya Ayodhya App offers devotees worldwide a 360-degree virtual darshan - an inspiring blend of tradition and innovation.

An advanced crowd management system will ensure safety and comfort, monitoring real-time visitor movement and guiding the flow of pilgrims throughout the celebrations.

As night falls, 1,100 Made-in-India drones will light up the skies with mesmerising formations of "Jai Shri Ram", Hanuman carrying the Sanjeevani mountain, and the Ram Setu - a spectacular fusion of faith and creativity.

From the grand Rajyabhishek and Bharat Milap re-enactments to the enthusiastic Vanar Sena and youth competitions under the theme Mera Deep, Mera Vishwas, Deepotsav 2025 welcomes people of every age - a true celebration of #RamRajyaKaDeepotsav, where every diya tells a story of hope and harmony.

The grand Shobhayatra will feature seven tableaux illustrating the Kandas of the Ramayana, along with floats spreading messages of cleanliness, women's empowerment and social harmony.

The Origins and Legacy of Deepotsav

The history of Deepotsav traces back to the Ramayana, when the people of Ayodhya lit rows of diyas to welcome Lord Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman after their 14-year exile and victory over Ravana. The lights symbolised the triumph of good over evil, and that ancient tradition continues to this day.

Revived as a state festival in 2017, Deepotsav has since become a symbol of cultural and spiritual renaissance in Uttar Pradesh. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the festival has grown from a modest local celebration into an international event that embodies the spirit of Prabhu Shri Ram and the vibrancy of Indian heritage.

Deepotsav Through the Years

In its inaugural year (2017), 1.71 lakh diyas illuminated the Saryu River ghats, attracting about 1.5 lakh visitors.

By 2023, that number soared to over 22 lakh diyas and 24 lakh visitors, setting new Guinness World Records year after year.

The festival's budget too has grown - from ₹24 crore in 2017 to over ₹240 crore in 2023 - reflecting the state's commitment to preserving culture and improving infrastructure. These investments have enhanced the visitor experience while boosting the local economy, benefiting artisans, vendors and craftsmen who supply diyas, decorations and traditional wares.

The Deepotsav has thus evolved into not just a spiritual celebration, but also a driver of cultural tourism and livelihoods.

Cultural Revival and Global Participation

What began as a one-day event has now transformed into a week-long cultural spectacle, featuring Ramleelas, devotional music, and classical dance performances. The number of participating artists has risen from 500 in 2018 to over 2,500 in 2023.

Its international dimension has grown remarkably, with representatives from 60 countries participating in 2023 - turning Ayodhya into a global centre of cultural exchange. This year too, Ramleelas from Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Russia will showcase their own interpretations of the Ramayana:

Indonesia will depict Hanuman setting Lanka ablaze and Lord Ram's victorious return.

Thailand will perform three episodes - Shurpanakha's conflict with Lakshman, Ram's battle with Maricha, and the Ram-Ravana war.

Sri Lanka will present the local tale of "Ravaneshwar".

Nepal will showcase the "Laxman Shakti Prayog" episode, traditionally centred on Sita.

Such performances not only enrich the festival but also foster cultural harmony and mutual respect among nations.
