Atul Subhash's Mother Demands Custody Of 4-Year-Old Grandson, SC Issues Notice To Three States

Atul Subhash Suicide Case: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Karnataka following a habeas corpus petition filed by the mother of Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash, who died by suicide earlier this month.

In her petition, Atul's mother has requested custody of her four-and-a-half-year-old grandson, stating that the child's whereabouts are currently unknown.

She claimed that Atul's estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, who is in custody, and her family members have not disclosed any information about the child's location.

Atul, who worked for a private firm in Bengaluru, took his own life, alleging harassment by his wife and her family. He left behind a 24-page suicide note describing emotional distress from marital issues and multiple legal cases filed against him by his wife. In the note, Atul also accused a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh of favouring his in-laws.

Following the incident, Atul's wife was arrested in Gurgaon (Haryana), while her mother and brother were taken into custody in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

They were arrested by Bengaluru police based on a complaint of abetment of suicide filed by Atul's brother and have been sent to 14-day judicial custody after appearing before a Bengaluru court.

Atul's mother argued that, given the involvement of three states - Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Karnataka - the Supreme Court's intervention was necessary to resolve the matter and ensure justice. The case is scheduled to be heard in January next year.

Atul Subhash married Nikita Singhania, a software professional, in 2019. He had been facing nine charges, including attempted murder, dowry harassment, unnatural sex, and several others.
