Assembly Elections 2023: Five States To Go To Polls Between November 7-30, Counting On December 3

The Election Commission has announced the dates of assembly elections of five states - Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram on Monday.

In Mizoram, polling will take place on November 7, marking the commencement of the electoral process. Chhattisgarh, on the other hand, is set to hold its elections in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for November 7 and the second phase on November 17. Madhya Pradesh will conduct its elections on November 17, while Rajasthan is slated for polling on November 23. Lastly, Telangana will hold its elections on November 30, completing the lineup of important state elections in the country.

These elections are particularly noteworthy as the terms of the legislative assemblies in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh are set to conclude on varying dates in January of the upcoming year. Notably, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) governs Telangana, while the BJP holds power in Madhya Pradesh. In contrast, the Congress is currently in authority in both Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Mizoram - November 7, 2023:
The state of Mizoram will kick off the electoral process on November 7. Voters will cast their ballots to choose their representatives in the state assembly.

Chhattisgarh - November 7 and 17, 2023:
Chhattisgarh's electoral exercise spans two days, with polling scheduled for November 7 and 17. This extended polling schedule allows voters in various constituencies to participate in the democratic process.

Madhya Pradesh - November 17, 2023:
Madhya Pradesh will hold its state elections on November 17. The state's voters will decide the future composition of their legislative assembly on this day.

Rajasthan - November 23, 2023:
Rajasthan's turn to vote will come on November 23, 2023. The state's citizens will have their say in shaping the state's political landscape.

Telangana- November 30
Telangana will vote on November 30, 2023.

Counting of Votes - December 3, 2023:
Following the culmination of the electoral process in these states, the much-anticipated results will be officially announced on December 3, 2023.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has emphasized the pivotal role of citizens' awareness and cooperation in ensuring elections that are free, fair, and devoid of inducements. In this endeavor, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced the cVigil App, providing citizens with a direct channel to report any Electoral Malpractices. Notably, for every complaint received through this platform, the ECI pledges a response within a mere 100 minutes.

With the forthcoming Assembly Elections of 2023 on the horizon in five states, preparations are in full swing. An impressive total of 1.77 lakh polling stations will be established across 679 Assembly Constituencies (ACs). Among these, over 1 lakh polling stations will be equipped with webcasting facilities, a clear demonstration of the ECI's unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

One crucial measure of a fair election is the elector-to-polling station ratio, and in all five states, this ratio comfortably falls well below the ECI's norm of 1500 electors per polling station. This underscores the ECI's determination to ensure accessible and efficient voting for citizens throughout these regions.

In a remarkable show of dedication to inclusive democracy, polling stations will be set up even in reserve forest areas and sanctuaries dedicated to tribal populations in Madhya Pradesh. This reflects the ECI's commitment to ensuring that the democratic process reaches even the most remote and challenging locations.

Mizoram, too, presents an extraordinary electoral challenge. Here, polling teams are gearing up to access 22 non-motorable polling stations on foot and reach 19 riverine polling stations by boat. These extraordinary efforts underscore the commitment to inclusivity and a fair election, irrespective of geographical or logistical hurdles.

As the Assembly Elections of 2023 draw near, the Election Commission of India, under the stewardship of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, remains steadfast in its resolve to facilitate a democratic process that encourages citizen vigilance and ensures that every voice is heard, all while upholding the principles of freedom, fairness, and inducement-free elections.

Across 5 states, there are 679 Assembly Constituencies (ACs), representing approximately one-sixth of the total ACs in the nation. These 679 ACs collectively encompass 16 crore electors, constituting almost one-sixth of the total elector population in the country.

The Election Commission convened a meeting of observers last Friday, instructing them to diligently address the issue of monetary influence. This meeting brought together general, police, and expenditure observers for the upcoming assembly elections in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.

The terms of the legislative assemblies in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to conclude on various dates in January 2024, while the Mizoram Legislative Assembly's term will end on December 17 this year. Notably, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) governs Telangana, the BJP holds power in Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress governs Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, and the Mizo National Front leads the northeastern state.

With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections just months away, these impending assembly elections hold significant importance. They will not only shape the political landscape at the state level but also carry implications at the national level.
