"Sunday's nasty incident was a disgrace not only to politics but also to the nation," TMC spokesperson Derek O'Brien said at a press conference.

Earlier on Monday, the labour wing of the party, the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), staged a protest against the assault, says media reports.

Banerjee, president of the youth wing of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was on Sunday slapped by a youth during a rally at Chandipur in East Midnapore district.

The youth on the pretext of taking photographs on his cell phone slapped Banerjee after climbing up to the stage at a rally on Sunday.

TMC workers present on the stage caught the youth and beat him up. He has been admitted to a hospital. Midnapore district police had said that the youth identified as Debasis Acharya, a resident of Tamluk, was admitted to Tamluk hospital in a critical condition after he was caught and beaten up by TMC workers.
