Assam’s Muslim Population Reaches 40%: Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls It A ‘Life and Death’ Matter

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep concern over the demographic changes in the state, highlighting that the Muslim population has risen to 40% today from 12% in 1951. He emphasized that this issue transcends politics for him, characterizing it as vital to the state's future. Sarma's remarks, reported by ANI, underscored the gravity of losing several districts due to these demographic shifts.

Regarding recent criminal activities, Sarma had earlier voiced concern about incidents involving a specific segment of the population, refraining from identifying any particular community. He reiterated that while not attributing crime solely to any religious group, recent trends since the Lok Sabha elections have been troubling.

Furthermore, Sarma noted that minority community members from Bangladesh voted for the Congress in the recent elections, despite significant development efforts by the BJP-led governments at the state and central levels. He singled out this community as the only one in Assam engaging in communal activities.

Reflecting on the electoral outcomes, where the BJP-led coalition secured 11 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, Sarma acknowledged challenges faced by his party in the northeastern states, where the Congress made gains. He highlighted the influence of a particular religion in these states as a significant factor in electoral dynamics, emphasizing that such factors go beyond conventional political calculations.
