Underlying Resentment

The crux of the conflict lies in the demand for settlement rights in Professional Grazing Reserves (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserves (VGR) by the Hindi-speaking community. This demand has allegedly sparked resentment among the local population, leading to protests by various organizations, including the Autonomous State Demand Committee and the Karbi Students Association.

Escalating Tensions

On Thursday, a protest organized by these groups took an unexpected turn when a scuffle erupted between the two communities as the protestors were returning home late at night. The clash resulted in injuries to seven individuals, whose critical condition necessitated their admission to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital.

Swift Police Action

In response to the escalating situation, the police promptly intervened to bring the situation under control. Despite their efforts, tensions continued to linger in the area. DGP G P Singh confirmed the registration of a criminal case at the Kheroni police station and the arrest of 17 individuals involved in the incident.

Zero Tolerance for Lawlessness

DGP Singh emphasized the Assam Police's unwavering commitment to upholding law and order. He asserted that anyone found violating the law or engaging in disorderly conduct would face the full force of the law, with swift arrests and appropriate legal action.

Enhanced Security Measures

To ensure the restoration of peace and stability in the affected area, additional security measures have been implemented. Pickets have been set up, and increased patrolling is being carried out to deter any further disturbances.

The incident in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unresolved land disputes and simmering community tensions. It underscores the urgent need for constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution mechanisms to prevent such conflicts from escalating into violence. The prompt action taken by the authorities to address the situation and bring those responsible to justice is a positive step towards maintaining law and order in the region.
