Assam floods: Situation improves marginally; 24000 still affected across two districts

Guwahati, Sep 13: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement with flood water receding from two districts - Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. The flood waters receded from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts even as Jorhat, Morigaon, Nagaon and Sonitpur districts are still affected by the deluge, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said.

Around 24, 479 people in 146 villages are affected by the flood, the report said. Altogether 7,629 hectare of agricultural land was under water against 10,151 hectare of crop land yesterday, the report said. With improvement in the flood situation, relief camps set up by the district administrations for giving succour to the affected population have been closed down, it added.

Morigaon remained the worst affected district where 21,879 people have been hit followed by Sonitpur district with 2,200 population. The water level of the mighty Brahmaputra has fallen below the red mark even as river Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali river at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur are flowing above the danger level, the ASDMA report added.

Roads in several villages have been either damaged or portions washed away and culverts damaged by the deluge in Sonitpur district, the report said. The third wave of devastating floods has so far claimed the life of 76 people across the state taking the toll to 160, including eight in Guwahati in floods this year.
