Assam Chief Minister Surveys Future IIM Site Near Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently conducted an inspection at the designated site for the upcoming Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kamrup district, near Guwahati. This move comes after the central government's approval to establish a new IIM, aimed at bolstering the educational infrastructure in the state. Sarma expressed optimism that the institute, under the guidance of IIM-Ahmedabad as its mentor, would commence operations shortly from a temporary campus until the permanent site at Marabhita, within the Palashbari assembly constituency, is ready.

The Chief Minister highlighted that detailed plans for the institute would be solidified following discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during his upcoming visit to New Delhi. Sarma's focus remains firmly on development projects until August 2025, post which he plans to delve into political discussions. Accompanied by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Sarma's site visit underscores Assam's ambition to become an educational nucleus in Eastern India, hosting premier institutions like IIM, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the National Law University.
Last week, Sarma announced that the establishment of an IIM in Assam was a "special gift" from the Prime Minister to the people of the state. This initiative is expected not only to elevate Assam's status as an educational hub but also to meet the economic aspirations of its residents. The state government has been actively engaging with the central government for the past 18 months to bring this project to fruition, offering 76.8332 hectares of land in Marabhita for the institute's campus.
IIM-Ahmedabad has been tasked with preparing a detailed project report for the new IIM in consultation with the secretary of the Assam Higher Education Department. This report will subsequently be submitted to the Union Education Ministry for further action. The establishment of IIM in Assam marks a significant milestone in enhancing the educational landscape of Eastern India and is anticipated to contribute substantially to the region's socio-economic development.
