MACE Telescope Inaugurated in Ladakh: A Milestone for Cosmic-Ray Research in Asia
The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) observatory, the largest imaging Cherenkov telescope in Asia, has been inaugurated at Hanle, Ladakh. Built by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), this observatory is situated at an altitude of 4,300 metres, making it the highest of its kind globally. The inauguration marks a significant advancement in scientific research capabilities.

Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, inaugurated the MACE observatory on 4th October 2024. The event was part of the DAE's platinum jubilee celebrations. Mohanty praised the collaborative efforts that led to the successful completion of the MACE telescope.
Significance of MACE Observatory
Mohanty highlighted that the MACE observatory is a major achievement for India, positioning the nation at the forefront of global cosmic-ray research. He noted that this telescope will enable scientists to study high-energy gamma rays, enhancing our understanding of the universe's most energetic phenomena.
The construction of the MACE telescope was carried out indigenously by Mumbai-based BARC with assistance from Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) and other Indian industry partners. This collaboration underscores India's growing capabilities in advanced scientific infrastructure development.
Impact on Ladakh's Development
In his address, Mohanty emphasised that the MACE project not only advances scientific research but also contributes to Ladakh's socio-economic development. The presence of such a significant scientific installation is expected to bring various developmental benefits to the region.
The inauguration of this observatory represents a milestone in India's scientific journey, offering new opportunities for research and discovery. As scientists begin their work with this powerful tool, it promises to unlock deeper insights into cosmic events and phenomena.
