Asian Games 2023: India Take Medal Tally To 83 With 20 Gold

India has remained in the fourth position in the medal standings as the country won 20 Gold medals. So far, India bagged India have won 31 silver and 32 bronze. Thus taking India's total number of medals to 83.

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra defended his Asian Games gold in a thrilling duel with compatriot Kishore Jena, despite a technical glitch. Meanwhile, the men's 400m relay team also retained their title. India secured 12 medals on Wednesday, marking their best-ever performance at the Asian Games with a total of 81 medals, surpassing their previous record of 70 medals in Jakarta.

Chopra, the favorite, faced stiff competition when Jena surprised everyone with a throw of 86.77m. Chopra initially had a setback as his first attempt wasn't recorded due to a technical malfunction. The two athletes engaged in an exciting battle, with Chopra eventually achieving a season-best throw of 88.88m to secure gold, while Jena settled for silver.

Chopra expressed his satisfaction, saying, "It really became a tough duel which I enjoyed thoroughly. We are used to such high-level competition."

Kishore's performance earned him a spot in the Paris Olympics, surpassing the qualification mark of 85.50, while Chopra had already qualified with a throw of 88.77m at the World Championships in Budapest.

Additionally, the Indian men's 4x400m relay team clinched gold with a time of 3:01.58, and the women's 4x400m relay team secured silver. India's track and field athletes also added two silver medals, with Harmilan Bains in the women's 800m and Avinash Sable in the men's 5000m.

Earlier in the day, Indian race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won bronze in the inaugural 35km mixed team event. However, in men's high jump, Anil Kushare narrowly missed a medal, finishing in fourth place despite achieving a season-best jump of 2.26m. Sheena Varkey Nellickal finished sixth in the Women's Triple Jump final with a throw of 13.34m.
