Ashwani Kumar Reflects on the Legacy of Manmohan Singh as a Voice of Decency in Indian Politics
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, known for his decency and grace, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. Ashwani Kumar, a former law minister, expressed that Singh's death is a significant loss for the nation. Singh was a key figure in India's economic reforms and a consensus builder in politics.

Singh's passing was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was admitted to the Emergency ward around 8:30 pm after losing consciousness at home on December 26. AIIMS stated that he was treated for age-related conditions.
Legacy of Leadership
Kumar, who served in Singh's cabinet as the minister for law and justice, described him as an "exceptional exponent of decency." He noted that Singh's leadership was marked by magnanimity, integrity, and humility. Kumar remarked, "The passing of Dr Manmohan Singh is a colossal national tragedy."
Singh's approach to power was unique; he carried his authority with the lightness of a saint. His courteous nature extended to everyone, showcasing his noble purpose. Kumar highlighted that Singh's warmth and generosity were evident not only towards friends but also political opponents.
Steely Resolve
Kumar emphasised that those who mistook Singh's humility for weakness were wrong. His quiet dignity and determination were evident during the passage of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. Despite pressure from allies, Singh remained resolute in matters of national interest.
Singh was willing to risk his position as Prime Minister to do what he believed was right for India. Kumar believes history will judge Singh favourably for his contributions to the nation during his ten-year tenure.
A Peaceful Farewell
Kumar reflected on Singh's peaceful passing surrounded by family as an act of benevolence from above. He stated, "History will doubtless judge him more generously and without doubt this great son of India... will get his due from an indebted nation."
Singh's legacy includes steering India towards inclusive economic growth. His leadership style and achievements have left a lasting impact on the country.
