Asaram Granted Six-Month Interim Bail by Gujarat High Court on Health Grounds

Self-styled godman Asaram, serving a life sentence in a 2013 rape case, has been granted six months of interim bail by the Gujarat High Court, which cited his deteriorating health as the reason for temporary relief.

The 86-year-old convict, who is reportedly suffering from heart-related ailments, has been allowed to step out of prison to receive medical treatment. The court remarked that Asaram, despite his conviction, retains the right to proper healthcare and treatment at his advanced age.

While issuing the order, the bench noted that the Jodhpur High Court had already granted Asaram similar relief earlier, and Gujarat could not take a different view. The judges also acknowledged that his appeal hearing may take time and allowed him the option to seek further extension if there is no progress in the next six months.

During the hearing, the state counsel mentioned that if medical arrangements at the Jodhpur jail are inadequate, Asaram could be moved to Sabarmati Jail, where facilities are comparatively better.

The survivor's lawyer, however, opposed the bail plea, questioning the authenticity of Asaram's medical claims. The counsel pointed out that the convict had been seen travelling to Ahmedabad, Jodhpur, Indore, and other cities, and had not been hospitalised for long-term care. The lawyer further claimed that Asaram continues to receive Ayurvedic treatment in Jodhpur and currently has no serious health complaints.
