Over 2,000 Devotees from Asansol Participate in Maha Kumbh Pilgrimage at Triveni Sangam
A group of 2,000 devotees from Asansol, West Bengal, arrived in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. They travelled in 40 buses to participate in a sacred ritual at the Triveni Sangam. The Uttar Pradesh government shared this information in a statement. The devotees joined revered saints and took a holy dip as part of the event.

Swami Dilip Das Tyagi, a respected saint from Ayodhya and president of Raghuvansh Sankalp Seva, highlighted the group's journey from West Bengal to witness the grand event. Krishna Prasad, leading the organising committee, stressed the pilgrimage's deep significance. He mentioned that preparations had been ongoing for several months.
Significance of Maha Kumbh
The Maha Kumbh is renowned as the world's largest cultural gathering. "The Maha Kumbh is the worlds largest cultural gathering and we were all eager to witness its magnificence," said Krishna Prasad. Special yagna and havan ceremonies were also held during this time. Many devotees from West Bengal and other states participated in these rituals.
The visit by Asansol devotees gains importance due to recent remarks by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She expressed safety concerns at the mega religious gathering following a stampede incident. Her comments have drawn attention to the event's management and safety measures.
Safety Concerns Raised
On February 18, Banerjee criticised the Maha Kumbh, calling it a "Mrityu Kumbh" due to stampede incidents. She claimed authorities suppressed the actual death toll. "I will not call it a Maha Kumbh. It has now become a Mrityu Kumbh. It is like a death pit," she stated during an address in the West Bengal Assembly.
Last month, a stampede in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, resulted in at least 30 deaths and 60 injuries. Additionally, 18 people died in a recent stampede at an overcrowded New Delhi railway station. These incidents have raised questions about planning and safety at large gatherings.
Event Duration and Participation
The religious congregation began on January 13 and will end on February 26. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, over 60 crore people have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam since the event started. This massive participation underscores the event's cultural and spiritual significance for many attendees.
The Maha Kumbh continues to attract millions despite safety concerns raised by some leaders. The event remains a significant cultural and religious occasion for devotees across India and beyond.
