19 Detained for Arson at Bihar Station Post Custodial Death

In a recent turn of events in Bihar's Araria district, a significant uproar ensued following the custodial deaths of a man and a minor girl, leading to the arrest of nineteen individuals. The incident, which escalated into arson at the Tarabari Police Station, saw the suspension of the Station House Officer (SHO) and three other officials as per an official statement released on Saturday.

The turmoil began when a mob, outraged by the alleged police brutality resulting in the deaths, attacked the police station. They vandalized the property, set it ablaze, and pelted stones at the law enforcement personnel. The confrontation led to injuries among four police officers. Additionally, during the chaos, three civilians were reportedly wounded by gunfire from the protesters.

Authorities have attributed the deaths of Mitthu Singh, aged 40, and a minor girl to suicide, claiming they hanged themselves while detained at the police station. This explanation, however, did little to quell the anger of the local populace who took to violent protest in response.

The police's response to the escalating violence included arresting 19 individuals implicated in the arson and violence at Talabari Police Station. These arrests were made possible through evidence gathered from CCTV footage. In an attempt to control the situation, law enforcement resorted to baton charges and firing into the air to disperse the agitated crowd.

The injured parties from this incident have been hospitalized and are reported to be in stable condition. The background of this tragic event involves Mitthu Singh, who locals say had remarried his late wife's 14-year-old sister recently after his wife passed away a year ago. The couple was detained by police on Thursday afternoon based on complaints lodged by their parents.

This incident has sparked significant controversy and debate over police conduct and the safety of individuals in custody. The district police's statement highlights ongoing investigations and measures taken against those involved in the violence and arson. However, it also raises questions about custodial safety protocols and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
